VIRTUAL TUTORING

Virtual tutoring sessions can be conducted using a variety of platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx). Initial conversations are usually scheduled to informally assess the needs of the learner and to establish objectives, measurable milestones, and overall expectations. All tutoring engagements begin with a complimentary 30 minute phone call or virtual meeting to discuss the tutoring goals and schedule. The tutor will ask questions about the student's interests to enable customization of lessons, maximize learning opportunities, keep students engaged, and facilitate student confidence.

Tutoring sessions are typically 60-90 minutes once or twice a week.  The goals and objectives of the tutoring should be re-evaluated regularly and modified, as appropriate. CStarsky currently offers tutoring packages focused on learning English as a foreign language (ESL/ELL), adult literacy, creative writing, and phonics.

​Tutoring sessions ​are customized for beginning, intermediate and advanced students.

• American Accent Training*

These are specialized sessions for those who speak English well, but are concerned that they speak with a foreign accent.  If you feel your accent limits you in some way (e.g., communicating with customers or being perceived as credible) consider this tutoring. We work with students to identify patterns in pronunciation and ways to help them sound more like native speakers.

• C​onversation Tutoring

​Students will be taught strategies to carry on discussions with English speakers (e.g., asking questions related to who, what, when, where, why, and how). The focus will be on listening to what is being said as well as how to respond. ​

Adult Literacy**

 

Adult Literacy tutoring covers a variety of topics that adults may request. It is not unusual to get requests from adults with less than an 8th grade reading or writing level. We have also worked with adults needing to improve their number sense, in particular as it relates to simple financial calculations (e.g., grocery story or fast food transactions).

*If English is not your first language and you need help reading, writing, listening, and/or speaking English, we will design customized one-on-one sessions for you. Sessions may include a focus on American Accent Training by Ann Cook, 4th Edition.

**Sessions are customized for each learner. Typical topics may include reading (e.g., sounding out words), math (e.g., handling money), writing (e.g., letters), and discussion of topics in the news. Other subjects may be available on request.
